Thrills At Denaby

Denaby and Cadeby were mainly indebted to a last wicket stand of 56 by second team players T. Athron and F. Davis for their all out score of 116 in the Yorkshire Council match against Aston Hall. After Denaby had lost five wickets for 22, N. Pearson (38) and R. Cory (10) pulled the game round temporarily with a stand of 35.

When Athron and Davis came together the score had slumped to 61 for 9, a seemingly hopeless position; however, some fine hitting by Athron (30), ably assisted by Davis (19 not out) gave the score respectable proportions.

For Aston, M. Cownley took 4 for 27 and B. Simmonite 3 for 24.

Owing to interruptions by rain, Aston were left with only 75 minutes to get the 117 runs needed for victory. In order to maintain their position at the top of the South Riding League “A” Division, Aston were compelled to make an effort to get these runs. Likewise Denaby, having their worst season for some considerable time and in danger of relegation, were equally intent on making a bid for victory.

Aston, playing attractive cricket, went for the runs from the first ball but despite having to bowl throughout with an extremely wet ball, the Denaby bowlers stuck to their task and with a score of 96 for 6, Aston were 22 runs short of victory at the close.

For Denaby, Cory took 5 for 41, and for Aston Cownley hit 41 and Gilliver 18.
