A Century-Maker.

Denaby & Cadeby  202 for 2 Stairfoot 49

The credit for the highest individual made in the League last Saturday goes to W. Smith, of Denaby, who subscribed 120 not out against Stairfoot.

Young Smith is quite one of the best bats in League, and once before this season was well on the high road to a hundred against Mexborough when he was unluckily run out through a throw from the long field, which wrecked his wicket. This year has been rather longer in running into the coveted three figures, but he’s got there, and there will be few but what will say he deserves his success.

Smith would a useful recruit more than one county, and the pity is that he’s not Yorkshire born, otherwise would have been given chance in the trials at Headingly ere this.

Thanks largely his efforts and the assistance of E. Peat, who made 57, Denaby were enabled to declare their innings closed with their standing 202 for 2 wicket, which I believe, takes the highest batting rank of the current League season.

Stairfoot in reply could only scrape together 49 all out. Peat, with six wickets for 13 runs, being almost unplayable. So that Peat may said to have shown a sample of fine all round form, justifying the good reputation that preceded him to Denaby.
