A Day for the Bowlers at Denaby

Denaby and Cadeby were beaten by three wickets by Steel, Peech and Tozer at Denaby on Saturday. The match proved to be quite an interesting one, for both sides, struggled against keen, accurate bowling and keen fielding.

It was however a day for the bowlers: Denaby’s Harry Newton took six for 45 and T. Harper, of S.P. and T. took four for 15. The highest individual scores were 29 by Denaby’s Norman Oakley and S.P. and T.’s J. Wilkes.

Denaby lost their opening batsman, Arthur Ellis, who became Harper’s first victim for only two runs with the score at seven. With the addition of 23 runs five batsmen were back in the pavilion, two of them without scoring.             From 30 for six Oakley stayed with A. Hirst to take the score to 66 for seven before Oakley was caught on the boundary by S. Smith. The catch, brilliantly taken on the run, put S.P. and T. on the way to victory as Oakley was beginning to hit hard and score steadily and looked like being a hard obstacle to move. After his dismissal only Hirst offered any resistance to the keen bowling of Harper and Vickers and he stayed unbeaten to the end for 17 runs when Denaby were all out for 82.

The Same Pattern

Steel, Peech and Tozer’s innings followed much the same pattern as Denaby’s. They lost an early wicket when A. Beach was dismissed for two runs with the score at four. Wilkes and P. Bennett then took the score to 39 before Bennett was howled by Newton. Then four more wickets fell for the addition of only 11 runs and with the score at 53 for six, Denaby seemed to have a chance. R. Fuller and A. Vickers, however, took the score to 77 before Fuller was dismissed by Newton and then J. Robinson stuck with Vickers to take the score to 86 for seven. Vickers deservedly scored with winning runs with a boundary.

A keen and evenly matched game, but S.P. and T. just deserved their narrow victory.
