Fine Feat against Denaby
“Colt” takes seven for 29

In a keenly contested game on Saturday Denaby and Cadeby were beaten at home by Maltby Main. Maltby, batted first, scoring 130 and dismissed Denaby for 90 6T. Yorkshire Colt, Brian Jackson, took seven Denaby wickets for 29 runs, and S. Belton took six wickets for 34.

I Cutts (captain) and D. Brown opened for Maltby, both batsmen started confidently, Brown in particular was good to watch as he kept placing the ball just wide of four slip fielders, and both batsmen combined in some fast running between the wickets to score quick singles and take advantage of some poor fielding on Denaby’s part, when Brown reached 22 and the pair had put on 33, Brown was caught in the slips, by Arthur Ellis off Newton. Brian Jackson was next in and immediately showed his class with some good shots both defensive and attacking and stayed with cuts to take the score from 33 to 84 before he lapsed his concentration, and was clean bowled by Belton for 17. Shortly afterwards Cutts (46) became Belton’s second victim after only three runs had been added. T. Hayward and Dennis Jackson then took the score to pass the 100 before the last six wickets fell for 26.

Denaby went in after the tea interval but did not appear to start as confidently as Maltby had done and after the opening pair, Arthur Ellis and Norman Oakley, had put 22 Ellis became Brian Jackson’s first victim for only five runs. When only five more had been scored P. Tyler, bowled R Corey Denaby’s captain, for a “duck” and two wickets were down for only 27 runs, N Oakley and Peter Downing made the score a little more appreciative by taking it to 53 before Jackson had Oakley caught at the wicket by brother Dennis, for 39 runs. After this Denaby wickets began to fall steadily as four second team tailenders tried their hardest but were just not good enough against B. Jackson, who ended up with seven for 29 to dismiss Denaby for 96 and give Maltby the “double”.
