Rawlin upsets Denaby
Mexborough Bowler’s Fine Spell

Mexborough beat Denaby fairly comfortably at Mexborough on Monday. Eric Rawlin upset the Denaby batsmen and they were all out just inside their hour and a half for 110. Mexborough made stodgy work hitting off the runs at first but came with a wet sail towards the end and won with 10 minutes to spare. Denaby were weakened by the absence of a fast bowler in their attack.

Rawlin Bowled unchanged throughout the Denaby innings, a commendable feat for a pace bowler. He sent down 15 overs, three of which were maidens, and his six wickets cost 38 runs. Five of his victims were clean Bowled, the odd one being lbw. Dick Probert was the only Denaby batsmen to stand up to him with confidence and his 38 not out, which included three fours and two sixes, was easily the best contribution to Denaby’s score.

Mexborough lost Tibbles with only five runs on the board, but Ralph Burkinshaw and Rawlin put a better complexion on things, taking the score to 35. When Wainwright who captained the side in the absence of criddle, put himself on, the rate of scoring diminished notably, and Burkinshaw soon followed Rawlin when he tried to hit the Denaby slow bowler. Laurie Burkinshaw pursued a cautious policy and refused to hit anything but the loose balls, which, be it said, were not very frequent. At the other end Charlie Machin could not meet up his mind whether to go for the bowling or to treat it with respect. His compromise between the two courses was fortunately successful, and when Cusworth was brought on he saluted the advent of the new bowler by straight driving him into the old rifle range for six. He also hit a glorious six off Wainwright and his 39 not out included also four fours. Burkinshaw hit five fours in his 37 not out and the pair saw Mexborough’s total safely taken to 113 for 3 wickets. Holland had one for 14, Wright one for 18 and Wainwright one for 29 for Denaby. Wainwright was on the whole very steady and sent down few bad balls.
