Mitchell’s beat Denaby in a tight finish

Len Mattocks and the company continued their victorious council sequence, claiming as their latest victims Denaby and Cadeby. The visitors were dismissed tight finish for 163, after Mitchell Main and declared at 18249. With this trial fresh in their minds, Mitchell Main supporters are now awaiting with confidence the visit of the championship side from Elsecar.

Hero of the victory over Denaby and Cadeby was skipper Len Mattocks, who opened the batting and was still unbeaten with a score of 74 at the decoration. Len received valuable help from the youngster Brian Sykes, a product of Wombwell cricket lovers coaching scheme, who contributed 18. There was also good support from the tailenders Jack, Wood (6), Brian Hunsley (18) and Dent (15 not out). Most successfully Denaby bowlers were Stan Beldon (four for 39) and Alan Waddington (3 for 30). Brilliant little cameo in this match was the work of left arm spin bowler Young Rob Dent, who in 23 overs had six for 66 – grand figures on a wicket which looked like a batsman’s paradise. A “cap” for Rob was generously supported.

Early Denaby resistance came from Dick Cory, who had put on 49 before falling to Dent. To their credit the visitors went all out for the runs, and it was touch and go until the end, with Straw hitting 25 and Belden 19. There was quite a roar of applause when Roy Cooling relieved the tension by dismissing the last man, Forrest l.b.w.

Roy closed with a record of three for 60. Mitchell Main and now filling the role of the shock side. With notable victories over Beighton Steel, Peech and Tozers, and Denaby.
Question: Can they continue this sequence by defeating Elsecar tomorrow?
