Ellis and Beechery the Denaby – Rockingham stars.

Denaby and Cadeby beat Rockingham by 33 runs in Saturday’s Georgia Council match at Rockingham – a game of fluctuating fortunes, played under somewhat chilly conditions.

The few spectators saw a brilliant display of batting by Arthur Ellis of Denaby and Cadeby. After losing his partner, Oakley, very quickly, he and Carlin took the score into the 80s before Ellis was caught behind the wicket by Hudson off the bowling of Beechey for 46. As often happens in a big stand, his partner, Corey quickly followed, caught by Taylor on the square leg boundary off Broadhead. Of the remaining Denaby batsmen, only Peter Taylor reached double figures before the Denaby innings was brought to a close for 131.

Skipper Brian Ivill handled the Rockingham attack which was limited in numbers but not in capabilities, splendidly, the chief contribution coming from the fast medium bowler Harry Beechey, who bowled brilliantly, taking seven for 32.

Rockingham’s innings opened in a very different strain to Denaby’s, three wickets been down for 12 runs. Then Dalton, joined by Hudson, began to swing the game’s fortunes. After taking the sting out of Newton, Denaby’s opening bowler, these two went on to take the score to 59 before Dalton fell, caught behind the wicket for 21 valuable runs. His dismissal was indeed disastrous, for after scoring 24, Hudson was out at the same total followed by B. Ivill, who mishit one of Carlin’s left arm slows to be well caught. Then Taylor came to score a very spirited 20, including four fours and he was out, caught on the boundary, trying another big hit. This was virtually the end of the Rockingham innings of varied moods, and Denaby ran out winners by 33 runs.
