Wombwell Wipe off the Runs in Fifteen Overs

Wombwell Main 75 for 3 Denaby & Cadeby 73

A contrast in styles – one side drearily plodding their way through with runs at a premium, and the opposition hitting out to reach the target in quick time – marked the Wombwell Main v. Denaby and Cadeby Yorkshire Council match at Wombwell on Saturday.

Batting through 20 overs, Denaby and Cadeby could muster only 73, to which Wombwell replied with 75 for 3 in 15 overs.

Denaby’s opener, Arthur Ellis, batted monotonously for two hours to make a 28 before being bowled by Colin Parker. In sharp contrast was the batting of Wombwell Main’s Brian Ivill, whose score of 31 was achieved in only 12 minutes. Denaby’s Neil Pearson batted half an hour to score five.

With three men back in the pavilion for only four runs, Denaby and Cadeby were in a losing position from the outset. There were three ‘ducks’ in a row – N. Oakley, R. Dodds and A. Hough. At one stage Wombwell Main’s Terry Wroe had bowling figures of three wickets for two runs, going on to finish with four for 16.

For Wombwell Main David Garner made 20 and Alec Jackson carried his bat for 24. One wicket each fell to Neil Pearson (for 31), A. Dobbs (for 30) and D. Hough (for 14). One of the best Denaby contributions was a 17 by M. Phillipson.

Bowling for Wombwell Main, Colin Parker claimed two for ten, Harry Beechy two for 25, and Jim Irani one for nine.
