Denaby financial state ‘desperate’

Mr. J. Hall, vice-chairman of Denaby United Supporters’ Club, told members of the football and supporters’ clubs at their annual dinner on Friday that Denaby’s financial situation was “desperate”.

He said: “I can’t over-emphasise the desperate position we are in. It has been with us a long time now, and it is going to be a long hard struggle.

“If it were not for the loyalty of our supporters, I don’t know where we would be. They help us to keep the club going. However, we need a lot more supporters and spectators to boost finances.”
Mr. Hall referred to the absence of Mr. Sam Peck, the president of the club for many years, and his “loyal and faithful service”.

“I understand Mr. Peck is indisposed, and we sincerely hope it will not be long before he is back to normal health and with us again,” he said.

Tribute
The toast to the visitors was proposed by Mr. E. Langford, chairman of the football club, and replying in the absence of Midland League Secretary, Mr. H.C. Chambers, the Denaby manager Mr. Les Cowley thanked the clubs for their hospitality and paid tribute to the work of the supporters.

The toast to the Supporters’ Club was proposed by Mr. B. Lupton, who referred to the tremendous amount of work tackled by the Supporters’ secretary, Mr. G. Allport. “I am concerned,” he said, about the supporters who have left the club, and I would like to see them come back into the fold again. I am sure if we get the support we can make a go of it.”

Responding, Mr. Allport said he too would like to see an increase in the number of supporters and he was sure that once the membership increased the club would have “a bumper season”.

After the speeches, Mr. J. Richards, president of the club, presented a wristlet watch to Arthur Roberts, the former Denaby manager, and a tankard and inscribed cup to Frank Foster, the club’s left back, in recognition of six years’ service to the club.

Mr. Richards paid tribute to the ex-manager and the player and said that both of them had given stalwart service to Denaby United.
