Denaby Fruitcakes
Have an International Reputation

The fine iced fruit cake made by Mrs Connie Boyes of Firbeck Street, Denaby are now very famous almost internationally so, because for the past 17 years she has been baking cakes made from a “secret” family recipe handed down from her grandmother who was also a famous baker in Conisbrough many years ago.

Of the thousands of cakes Mrs Boyes claims to have made, about 100 have been sent to countries all over Europe for weddings, christenings, anniversaries and 21st birthdays. Her last cake to be sent abroad went to Korea four months ago and this Christmas alone she has made about 40 cakes for various occasions.

Mrs Boyes, who has two daughters and a son, uses no electrical apparatus in her cake making. All the mixing and weighing are done by hand, and the only aid that he has in the icing of the cakes is an icing pump.

Her largest cake was a four tier wedding cake made for the wedding of her daughter. The bottom tier of the cake weighed 17 lbs and the whole cake weighed almost 30 lbs. Mrs Boyes devoted almost all her spare time to her hobby of baking and although she has been at it for 17 years she has not grown tired of the hobby.

Countries to which Mrs Boyes’s cakes have been sent to during the past seven years include China, America, Korea, Singapore, Spain, Germany, France, Africa and Cyprus.

As Mrs Boyes sent any cakes to Russia? “Well no,” she says, “but it would be nice to say that my cakes had gone there too!”
