Denaby, in Doldrums, Bat Out Time Against Cortonwood

After being 65 for 6 at one stage, Denaby successfully batted out time in their match with Cortonwood on Saturday. Denaby, who were without skipper Dick Cory who has a broken finger, had a lot of chasing to do as Cortonwood raced to 86 in the first hour.

Baxter, who made 27, and Exley had 36 on the board for the first wicket at well under a run a minute before Baxter was out. Exley reached a very fine half century in only 63 minutes and included seven fours and one six. He was finally out for 65. Schofield batted confidently until he had made 36 when he was l.b.w. to Oakley. Then for the addition of only nine more runs Cortonwood lost four quick wickets. Wiseman and Moxon then added 38 in quick time to take the ‘Wood’s score to 184 for 7. Moxon was 10 not out and Wiseman 32 not out. Walker 4 for 60 and Oakley 2 for 23 bowled very steadily.

Some accurate bowling by Peploe and Schofield kept Denaby pinned down and after losing Ellis for 16 and Walker for 20 by the time the total reached 40, they never really went for the runs. A seventh wicket stand of 25 between Oakley and Pearson held up Cortonwood for some time until Oakley was caught by Moxon off Peploe for 21. At the same score D. Hough was bowled by Peploe for a “duck” but determined resistance by Pearson, who was not out 26, and Philipson, six not out, saw Denaby to 109 for 8 when time was called.

Peploe and Schofield took 4 for 40 and 3 for 44 respectively.
