Denaby in Thrills at Aston Hall

Aston Hall  115 for 9  Denaby & Cadeby  114

A boundary four off the fourth ball of the last over by Aston Hall veteran all-rounder Albert Robinson, gave his side a one wicket victory over Denaby and Cadeby on Saturday in one of the most exciting finishes seen at Aston for many seasons.

Aston, winners of section “B” last season, have started their matches in the higher grade in convincing style and this win over such formidable opposition shows they are likely to be one of the leading clubs in South Yorkshire. This match also tested the new rule limiting played to a total of 94 overs. Batting first, Denaby made their 114 in 42 overs. Aston talk 47 overs plus the five not used by Denaby and it was in the very last of these that they won.

Run a minute.

Arthur Ellis and Albert Jones were soon scoring that he ran a minute for Denaby but they were both back in the pavilion at 27, falling to catches off Aston secretary speed bowler Peter Hollis.

Denaby never really got a grip on the batting after this and it was largely due to an innings of 26 by schoolmaster Peter Downing and an 18 not out by W McDonald that they reached over 100.

For Aston Peter Hollis returned three for 36 and Albert Robinson four for 35.

Trevor Lancaster and W Howson reached 29 in Aston’s reply before being parted and another wicket fell at the same total. The third and fourth wickets fell at 43 and then Albert Robinson provided some solidarity in the middle batting.

The fifth and sixth wickets fell at 62 and 86 but Albert kept going and then Dick Cory put himself on to bowl. In a few minutes he changed the complexion of the game and put Denaby in with a real fighting chance – taking three quick wickets in Aston were 110 for 9.
