Denaby Main Orchestral Society at Sprotborough Hall.

On Saturday afternoon, the members of the above society, to the number of about 25, visited Sprotbrough Hall, the outward journey being accomplished by the Hull and Barnsley railway.

The day was beautifully fine, and could not possibly have been better for the occasion. Mr W. H. Chambers, manager of the Denaby and Cadeby Main collieries, accompanied the visitors.

Having arrived at the hall, the party were shown around the gardens grounds, etc , and great was the admiration of the company at the various objects of interest, one being a tree which covered a quarter of an acre of ground, some of the branches of which are again taking root.

On returning to the lawn, the stands were speedily erected, and the various instrumentalists commenced to the “baton” of Mr Moses Soar, the conductor of the band.

The following selections were excellently rendered: –

Gavotte, old comedy” (Bogetti); overture, “Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna*; (Suppe); Overture, “Bohemian Girl*” (Balfe); Overture, “Poet and Peasant*” (Suppe); Selection, “Festivalia,” (Williams); Selection, “Life on the Ocean (Binding).

An interval was made, and Lady Copley expressed the pleasure the band had afforded her, and all who had listened, and inquired of the rise and progress of the society. The light, shade, and modulation, she said, were perfect, and reflected great credit on the conductor, and hoped that the society would soon pay a second visit.

After substantial and welcome refreshment, the programme was proceeded with, and the return journey was commenced about 8.30, all concerned having had an enjoyable outing.
