Denaby Main Parish Council

A meeting of this Council was held on Monday, Mr Chambers presiding.

There were present also Messrs Wright, Rose, Soar, Wingfield, Tennant and Mrs A.E.Kay (Clerk)

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

The Clerk then read some correspondence in the Mexborough Urban District Council. One was a letter promising their help in obtaining a footpath for the Ironbridge at Denaby, better known as Gray’s Bridge. The Clerk of the Mexborough Urban District Council also sent another letter enclosing a copy letter from the County Council explaining that they had better communicate the Doncaster Rural District Council.

Mr Tennant said he had had a conversation with a member of the Mexborough Council, and he was told they were trying to get a pathway made which will be independent of the roadway, and rest on projecting iron girders, and not take any of the road up, and the urge the Denaby Parish Council to lay the matter before the Doncaster Rural District Council, and do their best to get it done. It was resolved to lay the matter before the Rural District Council as advised, and Mr Chambers promised to support it, being a member of that authority.

Lighting

Mrs Kay spoke of the lamps wanted to be erected in Ferry Boat Lane. She said that the Mexborough Council had asked the Denaby Parish Council to pay half the expense.

Mr Tennant said he did not think they had any right to pay off the expense. They could not pay for what was in Mexborough.

Mrs Kay said that she knew the spot well, and as she was a frequent foot passenger that way she had some interest in getting a lamp put there. But apart from that it was much used by people from Denaby coming to Mexborough to trade, and if they stop using it on account of the danger to be encountered on dark nights, the Mexborough tradesmen would have cause to complain.

Allotments

A letter was received from Mr Fullerton with reference to allotments. He rejected the Councils offer of £2 10s per acre, and offered to let them have the land at £2 5s per acre, they to pay all rates and taxes and other outgoings. It was resolved to write to Mr Fullerton again on the matter.

Conisborough’s scheme for an Urban District

Mr Tennant, speaking with reference to the scheme put forward by Conisborough for including Denaby in an Urban District, said his objection to the scheme was that they only wished to include the largest rate paying concern in their scheme, that was they wished to come just as far as the collieries. They wish to include Cadeby Main Colliery without including the parish.

Mr Chambers: They cannot have Cadeby Main without the parish, it simply is an absurd idea.

Mr Tennant said he was not impartial to Urban powers, but he was most decidedly impartial to them as far as including only part of Denaby went.

Mr Chambers: Unless they take in the area of the whole of the parish, their case will fall to the ground, but is they do that they will have a chance, but even then they will have a good deal of opposition.
