Earns Him Gaol Sentence

Sentencing Frank William Rushton (21) miner of Barnburgh Street, Denaby, to 18 months imprisonment at West Riding Quarter Sessions at Wakefield on Wednesday, Mr, W. A. B. Goss, Deputy Chairman, told him he was a bad influence on two other men who appeared with him. They were Peter Lucas Blythe (26), miner, and Alan Kay (18) labourer, both of Barnburgh Street, Denaby.

Rushton admitted breaking and entering, with Blythe and Kay, the L.N.E.R. Athletic Club, Swinton, on December 12th last and stealing, and breaking and entering with Blythe, the Hickleton Golf Club, and with Kay, Connie’s Cafe, Mexborough.

Rushton asked for 12 other offences, nine committed with Blythe or Kay, who asked for six and five other offences respectively to be considered. Blythe and Kay were stood down to be sentenced on Friday.

Mr. A Hutchinson, prosecuting, said P.c. Atkinson and P.c. Hutton found the main door to Hickleton Golf Club broken open and doors inside leading to the bar forced, when they examined the property at 3.20 a.m. on December 13. They, walked along Hickleton Road and found Rushton. He explained: have had a row with his wife and have been out for a walk” but the policemen noticed that his pockets were bulging with bottles.

Rushton admitted breaking into the club and said that there was another man up the road. They found Blythe in a gateway. The property stolen from the club was worth £10 17s. 9d. and all was recovered. Later the men admitted creaking into the L.N.E.R. Club, and as a result of their statements. Kay was seen and admitted that offence. He said also that while on leave from the Army at Whitsuntide they had broken into Connie’s Cafe.

Many Other Offences

Other offences which were admitted variously by the trio, were housebreaking in Church Street, Conisbrough, the Conyers Hotel, Conisbrough, storebreaking at Market Place. Denaby, shopbreaking at Denaby Lane, Denaby, breaking into the Rotherham Golf Club, Thrybergh, garage breaking at Doncaster Road Denaby, Black Lane, Denaby Wheatley Street, Denaby, shopbreaking at Market Place, Denaby and stealing at Bank Street, Mexborough and Carr Lane, Conisbrough.

P.c Atkinson said Blythe was married with two children, Rushton was married with three children and Kaye was unmarried.

Mr J.H.Munn said Kaye was living with Rushton, his brother-in-law. He had run away from home to join the army and after absenting himself at discharge. Since then he had tried to work but there was an unhappy picture of a boy who for the last four years had been out of control.

Blythe said he and his wife had never had a home of their own and employment had been hard to and. since he came out of the Forces. He was hard up when he committed the offences. They had lost a son two months ago and he asked for a chance to hake a clean start.

Rushton said he had no excuse to offer, but he apologised to those people for whom he had caused trouble and said it would never happen again.
