Denaby Man’s Fate.
Found Drowned in the Thames
The body of Jepson Hartley (35) of I5, Strafforth Terrace, Denaby Main, was recovered last week from the Thames at Wapping. Hartley left Denaby Main for London on November 15th to “try his luck,” as he told his relatives, and added that they were not to worry about him if they did not hear from him for some time. He had been out of work for a considerable period. He went to London to seek work.
Nothing was heard of him, and last week a paragraph was published in this paper to the effect that the body of a man had had been recovered from the Thames wearing clothing on which were the name and address of a Denaby outfitter. No letter or identification were found on the man.
Hartley’s relatives read the paragraph, and on Saturday reported him missing to the Conisborough police, adding that the body recovered from the Thames might be Hartley. On Tuesday Mr Jacob Hartley with his sister, went to London, then identified the body as that of their brother. At an inquest on Wednesday a verdict of “Found drowned” was returned.
The body was brought to Denaby Main by road on Wednesday, and the funeral took place at Denaby Main yesterday.
Mr Hartley was a member of an old Conisborough family, formerly residing at the glass works, where his father worked for many years.
