Denaby Men meet National Officials.

Trouble came to a head at Denaby May Colliery. This week when the pit, which employs 1300 men, came to a complete standstill. The 100 percent strike began on Sunday´s nightshift, and was supported by Mondays days hift workers.

“There is no single reason for the strike. It has several causes which had been brewing up and have now come to a head,” declared the N.U.M. branch delegates, Mr Harry Powell.

Almost 2 years ago of the whole of the branch committee resigned en bloc, Mr Powell explained. He went on: “the present committee has been instrumental in stopping strikes during the past two years, but now we are backing strike action.”

The committee have issued a 1000 word statement listing their grievances. These allude to working conditions, rates of pay and discipline.

“Ever since the new committee was formed we have had no corporation from the management,” said Mr Powell.

Ald G.M.Hansen, secretary of Denaby N.U.M. Branch told the “South Yorkshire Times” yesterday (Thursday):

“We went to London on Wednesday and met Mr Sidney Ford, National President, and Mr Will Paynter, general secretary. We told them what we consider to be the facts of the case, and afterwards they said ´well you have impressed us´ then told us that the matter should be dealt with at Area level.

“They put facilities at my disposal to ring up the Area headquarters in order to arrange a meeting between four officials of our branch and the N.U.M. area officials. That meeting has been arranged for Saturday morning.
