Denaby Notes

Boy killed

When running across Doncaster Road on Wednesday, in front of his home, Peter Woodward (6), son of Joseph Woodward, 102, Doncaster Road, was involved in a collision with a motor car driven by Mr. Cecil Millwood, Mexborough undertaker.

He was removed to Fullerton hospital, but died shortly after admission. At the time of the accident Woodward was returning from school for his dinner. An inquest is to be held at Fullerton hospital this morning.

Landmark to go

A local landmark may disappear in the near future, if as a result of investigations by the Urban Council, it is thought and advisable to have the old chimney stack near the railway crossing felled.

The lightning conductor on the chimney has broken and the recent storms have brought fear that the stack may be struck and brought down in an awkward position, possibly causing some damage.

The chimney is over 50 years old, and was part of the old bone factory which stood on the site.

Street perils

During the past week several children have been knocked down in our streets, either by cyclists as or motorists, fortunately without serious result, except in the tragic case of Peter Woodward, the little boy who was killed on Wednesday.

In many parts children are frequently seen playing on the roads and running across in front of traffic, a dangerous game. The motorists in such cases should stop and if possible obtain the names and report the offenders to the police.

Next week our roads will be particularly busy with race traffic and we cannot emphasise too strongly the care that should be exercised by and for the children. Special care should be taken to keep children off the main road as much as possible
