Former Denaby Pit Manager Dies in Blackpool

The death occurred last week of Mr. Nathaniel Irving (64), of 50. Argyll Road, Blackpool following a long illness which terminated in hospital.

Mr. Irving came to the South Yorkshire coalfield in 1947 from the Mining Germany Commission in and was appointed Manager of Aldwarke Colliery. After 7 years there he became Manager of Denaby Main but ill-health caused an early retirement two years ago.

He was a native of Lancashire where, until going to Germany after the war, he had spent his working life in the pits.

The funeral on Monday was at Ashton-under-Makerfleld, the birthplace of Mr. Irving, where most of his relatives live. The service was at St. Oswald’s Church and present from the No. 3 (Rotherham) Area of the National Coal Board were Mr. R. Lees former Agent of Aldwarke, under whom Mr. Irving served and Mr. S. J. Large who also represented the British Association of Colliery Management.

Mr. Irving left a widow, three sons (one of whom is in Australia) and a daughter.
