Denaby Star to Go On Globetrotting Football Journey For Keeps

Denaby United’s star left half, Roy Ainscough, will be taking to the soccer fields 14,000 miles away from the mining village where he has made his name when he emigrates to South Australia next month.

Roy. of 3, Shoolfield Drive. Thorogate, Rawmarsh, has played for United at Tickhill Square since he was 19 years-old. He joined when they were in the Midland League and leaves, six years later, after four seasons in Yorkshire League football. He is to join Elizabeth City F.C. in the South Australian League.

He and his wife, Susan, and their two children, Sally (eight months) and Shaun (3) will leave Southampton on December 13th on the “Fair Sky.” During their four or live weeks trip they will spend Christmas and New Year aboard, before arriving at Elizabeth, near Adelaide, in January.

New Job

Roy, a former pupil of Mex-borough Grammar School, will live in a rented bungalow in the town until they settle. The football club have found him’ a job with General Motors In Elizabeth. “There are better prospects in Australia,” said Roy. “Things do not look so good in the steelworks. I am more interested in the footballing aspects.

Their minds were made up to go to Australia eight months ago, when Denaby teammate Brian Parker gave Roy the name of the secretary of Elizabeth City F.C.he wrote and was offered a job.

Part-time

“I think I will be all right to make the grade in football but the job with General Motors comes first,” he said. “Football la only part-time. I hope to go to night school to take a course in football coaching. If I can get to a better club I will do.”

“I have always wanted to go.” said his wife, Susan. “The climate is a Mediterrann one and it will be better for the children.” Deraby United officials, with the co–operation of the secretaries of junior clubs in the area— Northcliffe. St. Albans and Tom Hill Old Boys— have arranged a testimonial match for Roy on Sunday, December 8th, at Ticichill Square.

The kick-off will be at 10,30 a.m. and the proceeds will be presented by chairman of Denaby United, Mr. Eddie Langford, at a social evening at Denaby and Cadeby Miners’ Welfare on Tuesday,
