The First Hurdle,
Denaby Six at Bentley

Bentley Colliery 2, Denaby United 6

Denaby United began their “trek” to Wembley in fine style in defeating Bentley Colliery on their own ground. From the start it was evident that Denaby would put up a big score and a bigger margin would have been the outcome had it not been for Langton in the home goal.

Denaby gave an improved display. Parkin, their centre forward, was unfit after his injury against Scunthorpe. His place was taken by Hardy, who moved up from right half to score 2 goals. Shepherd moved over from left half to right half to allow Parry, the former Mexborough left half, to return to the side. Taylor came in at outside left, but he was not so promising. With the exception of Taylor, who has not yet found his true form, the Denaby team played as one, there being little to choose between any of the players.

Bentley lacked the combination and attacked spasmodically. Clifton tried several times to get his forwards moving, but his efforts were of no avail. Whittle had one or two chances to open Bentley’s account early in the first half, but his shots were either weak or went wide.

Bentley were the first to attack. Currie was almost through but hesitated and Tremain came out of his goal and dispossessed him. Retaliating on the left, Taylor ran the ball out when he had chance of putting across a centre. From the resultant flow in the ball landed in the Bentley goalmouth and Fleetwood had no difficulty in heading wide of Langton. Clifton sent out a long sweeping pass to Whittle, but his shot went wide playing with more confidence Denaby again scored. This time Goodison headed past Langton, and a few minutes later he added the third goal. For an infringement Bentley were awarded a freekick outside the penalty area, but Clifton shot went well wide of the mark. Denaby attacked continually and though Langton made several fine saves he was eventually beaten by Hardy following a melee in front of the goal.

Making a promising start after the resumption Bentley broke through the Denaby defence, but Jones just scrape the post. When Denaby got into their stride they were always dangerous and after 15 minutes Taylor added their fifth goal, and soon after Fleetwood went through to score the six with a first-time shot.
