A Holmes hat-trick

Boston 2 Denaby United 4

Denaby United must count their 4-2 victory at Boston on Saturday as one of their best Midland League performances of the season.

Boston’s victory on Monday evening gave them 42 points and moved them into fifth place in the league table (this result is not included in the table published in this issue) and on November 10 they won 3-0 at Denaby.

Man of the match was Derek Holmes, who became only the second Denaby forwards to register a hat-trick this season. Centre forward and leading goalscorer Cliff Martin has scored two hat tricks in successive games, and it was he who got the fourth Denaby goal at Boston on Saturday.

Boston were a goal down inside two minutes, when Holmes scored after pouncing on a short backpass, and two down after 30 minutes, Holmes setting up a chance for Martin.

Boston levelled up, but two more Holmes goals inside eight minutes provided one of the surprises of the afternoon.
