The Game Restored United’s Damaged Ego

Brodsworth Welfare 1, Denaby United 7

Denaby United’s Yorkshire league win at Brodsworth on Saturday was just what the doctor ordered. Memories at Hampton Road seven days before were trampled into the Brodsworth Turf in the goal rush, which was just the tonic United needed to restore a damaged ego.

But to give credit where credit was most certainly due – the home side put up 90 minutes of stiff opposition, urged on by a great display from centre half Taylor. They were still setting up helpful attacks at the final whistle, and that takes some doing when you are on the receiving end of this kind of drubbing.

First Two

Launders score Denaby’s first after just seven minutes – a typical piece of invention by their inside right, who also got the second in the 20th minute after centre forward Barton had worked the ball on his toes.

Mike Smith made it 3-0 after 25 minutes, chipping home a Barton shot which rebounded off Stockwell, and almost on half-time Gerry Smith sliced home Denaby’s fourth goal.

Barton, the architect of United’s forward line rolled the ball low into the net to make it 5-0 after 70 minutes.

By sheer persistence, Brodsworth force themselves back into the game and Gordon Smith had to make a great save to pull a curling Collingwood shot out of the air. In the end the home side’s efforts were rewarded and they got their only goal through a Taylor penalty after 75 minutes.

Second Double

Launders rounded things off nicely with two well-known taken goals in the last 10 minutes.
