Exclusive Harvey
Beats Denaby at Saltergate
But It Was Hardly a True Reflex

Chesterfield Res. 4, Denaby United 1

Denaby’s performance at Saltergate did not warrant such a defeat. On the run of the game Chesterfield’s display was worth only one goal, three of the four being gift goals due to misunderstanding. Denaby were weakened by the absence of Crookes, at outside left, who was having a trial with Sheffield United “A,” and his place was taken by Cotton.

Early Attack.

Facing a strong sun, Chesterfield made an early attack, Dando swinging the ball out to Spence who shot high over the bar. Denaby retaliated on the right, and a centre from Masserella was sent wide by Grainger. Another Denaby attack saw Betts ruled offside. Tremain bought off a fine one-handed save when dealing with a short from Davies, who had fastened onto a pass from Dando. Davies was responsible for the next move. He centred for Harvey, but Tremain rushed out to gather the ball and cleared. After 15 minutes Chesterfield took an undeserved lead. For a foul against Happs, Davies dropped the ball into the goalmouth. Tremain had the ball well covered, but Swift, in an endeavour to clear, nodded the ball to the feet of Harvey, who shot into an empty net.

Harvey scored again but the point was disallowed for offside. Again Chesterfield got the ball into the net; this time Swift, attempting to clear Harvey’s shop, deflected the ball past Tremain. The Denaby goalkeeper received rounds of applause when dashing across his line to save brilliantly from Davies, and later a similar shot from Harvey. Masserella made several attempts to get going, and eventually Betts got through only to shoot wide.

Little Progress.

On resuming Denaby were on their aggressive, but could not get through. Dando had a chance to increase Chesterfield’s lead, but he shot yards wide. The Denaby goal had a narrow escape when Spence struck the bar with a cross shot. Tremain injured his shoulder in attempting to get to the ball, which went to Harvey (who had now changed places with Dando) but he shot wide.

Harvey, however, completed his hat-trick and secured his 24th goal in the Midland League, when Mcaininley headed the ball into the middle. A few minutes later Davies secured the fourth goal after beating Parry. There was a noticeable tightening in the Denaby defence, and the forwards showed even greater zest than through the earlier part of the game. Fleetwood and Grange missed the mark with good shots and Betts had two shots saved by Gaskell. Midway through the half Denaby reduced deficit. Grange put the ball into the middle for Betts to hoodwink the defence and Fleetwood rounded Ellison to fasten on to the ball and score the best goal of the match. In the last 10 minutes Denaby made the running. But the forwards showed poor marksmanship. Tremain gave probably one of the best displays of the season; Happs did more than his share of work, and of the halfback line Beardsley stood out; Swift had an off day.
