Ease and Artistry
Barnsley Get Three at Tickhill Square
Denaby Rarely in the Hunt

Denaby United 0  Barnsley Reserves 3

it is just one of those football curiosities at Denaby, after holding Gainsborough to draw a week ago, should lose to Barnsley, while Frickley, who sent their hopes soaring by defeating a strong Bradford side at Westfield Lane, should lose to Gainsborough in a cup tie by seven clear goals.

This matter Tickhill Square was not half so one-sided as some Barnsley – Denaby Jews have been the pass, but at the same time Barnsley left nothing in doubt.

They went ahead after 20 minutes, lucky late in his manner of scoring, but just reward on the run of the game, took a second in the 37th minute, and set the seal to victory after nine minutes in the second half.

With few exceptions Denaby rarely looked like scoring. Much was attempted, little achieved. Gamely a hard-working halfback line, in which Happs was a Trojan, said itself to foil the Barnsley raiders and sent their own forwards away on their goal hunting mission. But the task was too great. Such a formidable forward line as Hawksworth, Hine, Calder, Baines and Bray was obviously too much to handle effectively.

Never extended

Barnsley played with much ease and artistry, and were never extended.

In one of many lightning wind raids Bray sent across a hard low centre, and WILLIAMS attempting to steady the ball and clear, almost on the goal-line, unfortunate put through his own goal. BRAY always a sharpshooter got the second 17 minutes later.

A Reshuffle

Thus Barnsley crossed over with a two goals we. When Denaby took the field after the interval they reshuffle the forward line to an injury to Betts, but he was not long before the original formation was reverted to, and in the meantime Barnsley had continued as in the first off, to call the tune.

CALDER headed in the third goal was a lively spring after nine minutes, and though they were narrow escapes – in both goals – that was to be the last of the match.
