Bradford City Res completed the double over Denaby United on boxing day when they beat them away 3 nil. United lost 1 nil at Tickhill square on Christmas day and the home game was certainly no holiday feast.

Denaby should have had a hat full of goals in this game and although Bradford keeper Johnson played brilliantly many goal mouth chances were fritted away by United forwards.

The home side enjoyed a territorial advantage through out but when Bradford clicked into gear they showed them self to be a smooth working combination. The heavy ground, greasy ball and awkward cross wind did not make for copybook football but even making allowances for these conditions the standard of play sank to a very low ebb at times.

Denaby worked hard as always but one of the outstanding bolts among the forwards was the tendency to hold the ball to long this allowing Bradford time to cover what in the first place were gaping holes in their defence. Half an hour had elapsed before Bradford produced their first shot and as United swarmed round the visitors goal one wondered how much longer the ball could be kept out. Johnson took shots chest high under the cross bar and down by the post and when he was not in position Denaby either shot wide or against a defender. Ron Duggan was never allowed a great deal of room in which to operate and his best shot a low drive to the far corner of the net ten mins after the start of the second half was brilliantly saved by Johnson.

Denaby worked well together and timed up after allowing Bradford too much rope in the opening stages of the second half . The outstanding man in defence was Barnes. The fact that United gained 18 corners is some measure of the superiority they enjoyed but as always it is goals that count and the lone one of the match came after 88 mins. Chapman, Bradford’s inside left pushed through, past two defenders and took it in his stride to score with a drive that gave Williamson no chance.

Williamson played well and his handling of some shots from the wings was perticualiry effective.
