Never Smell Of Goals in the Air at the Square

Denaby Utd. 0, Hatfield Main 0

A win for Denaby United in this Yorkshire League battle-of-the-giants at Tickhill Square would have put them back on top of the table; Hatfield were obviously content to draw, in a dismal match.

The home side roared for a penalty after Peter Caunt went down in the box after two minutes. but Referee S. Hutchinson disagreed. Denaby hogged nearly all the early play, looking likely to go ahead any time with a spell of clever Soccer.

Cenre forward Brian Parker had a chance after a great Denaby move, but Howells came out of his goal to mother the ball. Hatfield had their turn, at midfield disslastion. and Hickson might

them. Brian Parker was off-beam I again with a shot that went wide.

Centre-half injured

In the closing minutes of the first half, Hatfield centre-half Benson came out of a flurry in his penalty area with a nastily cut eye. The battle-scar, sustained going up with a Denaby forward for a high ball, troubled him for the rest of the match.

Second half play was dreary. Denaby had the edge, and the spectators had the excitement of is Caunt shot from a good high ball by Trevor Whittaker. a fine individual effort from Alan Cooper and a further Caunt attempt that trickled weakly past the post, to keep them warm. But neither team was decisive, and there was never the smell of goal. in the air..
