Unsuccessful Experiment.

Denaby United  0  Scunthorpe United  2

Scunthorpe were easily worth their two goals’ victory against Denaby, on the latter’s ground.

Denaby’s experiment, of bringing Tim Peters to centre-forward proved a failure. Peters was not a bit happy in the position, and the whole line never got properly going.

The Scunthorpe defence was very sound, but their inside-forwards, though provided with plenty of chances by Jenkins, were somewhat ineffective. The two goalkeepers, Hanna and Lee, gave delightful exhibitions.

There was no score at the interval, but Scunthorpe attacked determinedly on the resumption. Ackroyd missed the goal with a penalty-kick, but after a quarter of an hour’s play Lemons put his side ahead, Roebuck adding a second some twenty minutes later.

Castleford  3  Mexborough Town  1

Cast!eford Town beat Mexborough cleverly at Castleford. In the first half the home forwards were irresistible, and with the visitors’ backs unsteady, Oldacre (2) and Cook scored.

Mexborough improved on turning round, C. Taylor and Machin changing places. They made a great effort and reduced the lead through Reed, after Hodgkiss had made a brilliant run and centre.

Carlin kept a good goal, and saved a penalty kick, taken by Robins.

The game was keenly fought.
