Heavy Scoring at Denaby.

Denaby United  0  Sheffield United Reserve  7

United gave a very poor display in, their match with Sheffield United Reserve, who won by seven goals to nil. All the points were scored in the first half, during which the Denaby defence lacked judgment of even a Sunday school league team.

At least five of the goals were practically given the visitors, and Groves, who got four himself, was on occasions practically asked to score.

The home half-backs, too, were weak, while the forwards didn’t receive sufficient support to get properly going. The ragged ness of Denaby gave little opportunity of judging the actual merit of the “Blades,” but enough was seen demonstrate that in Charles the Bramall Laners have a greatly improved inside-left, and capital centre-half in Wagstaffe. Groves was always an intelligent pivot, distributing the ball well and shooting hard and often. Indeed, the Sheffielders, all-round were the cleverer and faster side.

Grimsby Reserves Beat Mexborough.

Grimsby Town Reserves 5  Mexborough Town 2

Goals were cheap at Blundell Park on Saturday for Grimsby Reserves and Mexborough piled on seven between them, the Fisherman’s share being five of the total. They were always a better side and Mexborough would have fared badly indeed but for the smart work of Davidson, Hargreaves and Tomkins, worked halfbacks played splendidly.

The Mexborough backs were weak, and their forwards ragged. Tomlinson alone of the attacking line acquitted himself well. Grimsby were weak at halfback, but enterprising forward and solid at back. Huxford was the most useful of the forwards. His goal in the second half was a beauty.

Goates played sound game, too, while Hall did not do badly. Blanchard and Burk at ill kicked and tackled well full-back, while Bradley in goal was smart. His vis-a-vis, Rounds, per formed erratically, doing good and bad things in turn.
