Denaby got clear of the bottom of the league again by drawing 1-1 with Bradford City Reserves at Tickhill Square on Monday after a fast and interesting game. Denaby were unfortunate not to field their full team, as Siddall did not turn up, and Senior (a half-back) had to be brought in on the left wing and Moss moved over to the right.
These changes undoubtedly handicapped the team for Senior was obviously out of place on the wing with the result that the attack was unbalanced. Under the circumstances neither side had cause for dissatisfaction at the result, for though Bradford got the ball in the net twice, one goal being disallowed for offside, their goal had as many lucky escapes as Denaby. The strangest of these was when McDermott in trying to clear a centre from the left volleyed the ball against his own upright from which it rebounded into play while Pickard looked on, helpless. Wraith missed a glorious chance from five yards out in this half, but on the other hand Brannan knew very little about two fierce drives which rattled the Denaby crossbar.
Bradford started at a tremendous pace, the dry ground and light ball being conducive to fast football. It looked as though they would soon take the lead but they did not succeed till 35 minutes had elapsed, when MEDLEY scored a simple and rather lucky goal, deflecting a pass from Stannere so that the ball just rolled over the line with Brannan moving the wrong way. Denaby always had their share of play and both bake gave grand displays. Thompson not only broke up many Bradford raids but found time to Pace the ball well for his forwards, while Taylor was rarely beaten in a tackle. The halves were not so convincing but Smith did well after a shaky start. Norman, too, showed improvement anti Mountney was a useful factor in attack though he left his wing man too often. Black and Wraith were the pick of the forwards, and BLACK’S goal after five minutes in the second half was the outstanding incident of the match. He got the ball five yards outside the penalty area and beat three men within ten yards before placing the ball past Pickard. Wraith was a great worker in midfield and often used the ball well. The conditions did not suit Adams and he was far too slow in controlling the ball.
