Denaby Utd Sadly Out of Form against Bridlington

Denaby United 1, Bridlington Trinity 2

Denaby United, who began the season with a home defeat against newly promoted Lincoln United, produced another non-descript performance when they were beaten 2-1 by old rivals Bridlington Trinity, on Saturday.

They began this Yorkshire League match in eager fashion, and the hectic play of both sides suggested a repeat of last year’s’ high-scoring match, but passes tended to go astray, and with swift, hard tackling, forwards were often caught in possession

Denaby looked an ill-balanced side against the East Coast opposition and their game cried out for someone to slow the pace down, to assume some sort of mid-field authority, even to look before passing. Goals which had looked likely at the onset, became more remote as the game wore on and Denaby’s frenzied attacks beat a hopeless tattoo against the massed green shirts of Bridlington,

Roddis nearly scored with a diving header, but the ball was scrambled clear, and that seemed the highest point to which Denaby could aspire, for Bridlington’s forwards were producing some neat movement;, and when a goat did come for Bridlington it was not unexpected, Dunmore ramming home the ball following a slick raid dawn the middle.

Heavy Pressure

Denaby came storming hack in the second half and, with Ainscough adding his strength to the attack, they stretched Bridlington to, the full ,but their equaliser, when it came, was more the result of constant pressure than any fluent attacking move. Whitehead was the scorer.

Even so they might have taken both points if they had been a little steadier in front of goal, but Morley and Senior looked out of place and Whittaker was not his most usual effusive self. In the 88th minute Cartwright looked he pushed Caunt as they were running for the ball, and slipped a pass to Coupe, who shot past a helpless goalkeeper

Denaby appeared jaded and ill at ease following their midweek F.A.Cup game, no doubt they were hoping for a repeat the luck which had removed Mexborough from the Cup, the programme billing Bridlington as Thursday night’s opposition.
