Sheffield Independent – Monday 04 January 1909
Denaby United 1 Rotherham Town. 2
This match attracted 2500 people to the Denaby enclosure.
Exchanges were very even in the first quarter, but the brilliance of Dyal imposed a strain on the Denaby defence to which it succumbed after twenty minutes play, Cowell getting home from his inside man’s centre.
A few minutes later and Waterall served with a beautiful pass from Dyal, got in a brilliant run and a shot which rebounded from the crossbar for Cowell to head into the net.
In the second half Denaby attacked smartly, but their shooting was wretched.
They got through, however, from a centre by Ball, which Padley converted.
Result: Rotherham Town, 2 goals ; Denaby 1 goal.
