Oh So Bracing For Skegness
Big Win on First Visit to Denaby
Denaby United 1 Skegness Town 5
Breathing the grimy air of South Yorkshire instead of their own traditionally bracing sea breezes, Skegness Town gained their finest Midland League victory so far this season when they defeated Denaby United 5-1 on Saturday.
The visitors were by far the better side. They were faster, their shooting was more accurate and they had far more co-ordination in their (forward line — a problem which has troubled Denaby since the beginning of the season and one which has been the primary cause of their poor record.
Although Denaby opened the scoring through inside right HANKIN following a perfect centre from right winger Bunclark after 14 minutes, it was obvious that they were no match for last season’s Central Alliance champions.
Their defence stood up to the powerful Skegness attacks until the 24th minute when inside left BROWN shot past goalkeeper Smethurst from about two yards during a goal-line- melee between attackers and defenders.
Penalty Miss
The seaside team commanded the remainder of the first half play but they were unable to take the lead. About 40 minutes a full back handled the ball and referee, Mr. R. J Blanchard (Scunthorpe), awarded a penalty to Denaby.
Left winger Bainbridge lined up the ball in a perfect position, but his resulting shot was clumsy and weak and Skegness goalkeeper. Webster, had no difficulty in blocking it.
After the interval Denaby went straight into the attack in an attempt to gain the lead through shock tactics. But it was clearly a dying effort. The ball was returned to their own half before the forwards had chance to get within striking distance, and only a fast move by left back Bedford, who deflected a 20 yard drive by Brown, prevented a further Skegness goal. Denaby had no chance to recover. After 53 minutes centre-forward BLOOMER put Skegness into the lead and right winger FOUNTAIN followed it up with No. 3 two minutes later.
Denaby’s play became mainly defensive, but even so, they could not hold back the Skegness forwards.
BLOOMER made it 4-1 after , 65 minutes with a perfect medium range shot through the defence and 19 minutes later he brought his personal score to three and his team’s to five with a short range drive.
Wing Weakness
Despite the inclusion in last week’s side of inside left Webster, who made his first team debut by scoring twice in eleven minutes against Yorkshire Amateurs in the first qualifying round 4 the F.A. Cup two weeks ago, the left wing is Denaby’s vulnerable spot and if they are to get back into winning ways it should be tightened up. Left winger Bainbridge was rarely in the game and his failure to put the side into the lead through the first half penalty was inexcusable.
