Penalty Says Denaby’s Bacon

Denaby United 1 Thackley  0

Thackley became the fourth team to visit Tickhill Square in Galway pointless the season, but unlike the others Thackley deserved a little more than what they got.

Denaby did not maintain their 100 percent home record without a few scares, as the visitors went close on several occasions and certainly deserve to be a goal up at half-time

but probably the game it is, Denaby survived to win the match the second penalty to make up for last week’s defeat at the hands of an inferior side.

Thackley open with some attractive football in the wet conditions, and Denaby were all out to keep the strong running visitors at bay.

They ran well, used the open spaces of the park, and shouted for the ball, Denby struggled and it was no surprise when the visitors created what should have been the first goal.

Corner

A delightful move involving Rhodes and Cole ended with inside forward McQuade slotting a shot wide of Whitehouse in goal, only for wing-half Petit to race in and dive to palm the ball off the line. Incredibly, the referee, acting on the linesman’s advice, signalled a corner ?

After this set-back Thackley continued to press, and Jimmy Wiggles blocked a volley on the line with Whitehead beaten, and by half-time Denaby were thankful to be still on level terms.

Whatever player-manager Harold Sapey said to his team at halftime, it worked wonders. Denaby came out for the second period a revitalised outfit, and hit back in no uncertain manner.

As Thackley slowed, Denaby went all out for goal, and in 56 minutes the match winner came from Roger Willey, He cracked in a penally for handball after Howard Morley had hit the post with a header,

It was enough to secure the points, but it gave little cause for satisfaction to the home team. It was a scrappy match with good football at, a premium, and Thackley could well install both points.

At least, they deserve one.
