At Denaby. The game opened at great pace and each goal was attacked in turn.

After eight minutes play Ball scored for the home team, and Denaby contrived to keep the visitors out despite- determined pressure.

United commenced their home Midland League campaign under most auspicious circumstances. The new grand stand was formally declared open Mr. W. H. Chambers, whilst a record crowd (excepting holiday fixtures and cup ties) had the satisfaction of seeing Wednesday Reserve beaten by the only goal scored in hard, ding-dong game.

The first half was of a bright character, but after the interval Wednesday wore their opponents down and kept them mainly in their own half.

Time and again the equaliser looked come, but the Denaby players put up such stout and determined defence, that all Wednesday’s concentrated and sustained efforts came to naught.

Interest never flagged from start to finish, and Denaby’s victory following on their defeat of Leicester the previous Monday, gave great satisfaction to their supporters.

Hancock, the home goalkeeper, gave a superb exhibition, bringing off quite half-a-dozen really sensational saves. Lawley and Board were dogged backs, whilst Thornton and Mitchell, the new captures, made most gratifying debut in the half-back line. Ball and Speight, on the left, were the nick of the home attack, Betts being a bit slow and Dyal sadly lamed in the second half.

For Wednesday Slavin was a tower of strength, whilst Bolland, Miller, and Tummon did many clever things.
