Denaby Get Into Stride After Being Two Goals Down

Denaby United 3 Scarborough 3

DenabY need have few regrets about their display against Scarborough at Tickhill. Square on Monday. There were faults which. wilI be remedied when the side has had opportunity to settle down, but taken as a whole they revealed themselves as possessing a good deal of Power and skill that was not there last season, a merit to turn leniency to profit

In the First Half

The chief different between the sides in the first half was Scarborough’s willingness to shoot at every reasonable opportunity and Denaby’s apparent disinclination to follow their example. That was. a feature which persisted last season, yet even those an interval lead would have been generous reward for Scarborough after the excitement of the last few minutes. Yet it was seconds before the whistle at the equalising goal-materialised and a point, scored as the first had been—by Betts—wiped out a fortieth-minute advantage. Scarborough had, if anything a slight advantage in team work in-this half, but it was a scrappy forty-five minutes, enlivened by few really well-constructed moves, for actually, if all its gilt-edged opportunities had been accepted, Denby would have been leading rather than biting for terms. But such is the uncertainty of football

Scrambled Goal

It w this willingness to shoot that earned Scarborough their first goal, which came after 18 minutes-in-this half. ; Hardy, booting in hard, struck the bar with a grand volley. Back came the ball, but ‘it was never properly cleared, and in the ensuing scramble HARDY got it into the net.

It was, only a couple of minutes later that a right wing move almost had reward for Denaby, but the second goal, was to fall again to Scarborough, and in the 40th minute, AGAR shooting in hard and obliquely from the right found reward. Yet it was significant that from the first really constructive move we had from Denaby a long overdue goal was to result.

Denaby’s Reply.

Betts it was who took the ball through from the halfway line, and, challenged by Jolly eluded, the Scarborough back and pushed it to Stone. For a second the wingman hesitated, but, as ever, BETTS was there to make the most of a difficult opportunity, and he headed into the net We might have had another, seconds later, had the Denaby centre-forward reached a ball pushed forward by Ford in ‘spite of constant harassing, but as It was the point was, no long delayed and this time BETTS as there again to see it safely on its way., So came the interval.

The first excitement of the second half which was to be punctuated by two more goals came in the tenth, minute, when Betts again put the ball into the net, but was ruled offside. Denaby more than emphasised their right to this reward, but as a direct reverse, Scarborough scored again in the 38th minute through RIVERS. It was from right I will get ready… a Ford move that BETTS completed his hat trick for the equaliser in the 40th minute

Well, we had some grand work from the Denaby defence this game, and with a grand lead from Betts, the inside-forwards, Ford  and Clifford, were conspicuous. Harvey came in for much well merited applause for good work in goal.
