Denaby Dominate The Final Stages

Denaby Utd. 3, Thorne Colliery 0

High riding Denaby United moved well from the start in Saturday’s Tickhill Square tussle with Thorne Colliery in the Yorkshire League. But they missed chances and it took a well- snatched opportunity by Smith, moved to the spearhead spot to replace injured Brian Parker, to bring down Thorne’s defences conclusively.

After this goal, which came out of a goalmouth flurry 30 minutes into the first-half, Cooper and Launders kept up the barrage and only the excellence of Jones, in the Thorne goal, stopped them from going further ahead immediately.

Thorne’s forwards could not give Denaby’s defence much trouble, because they lacked finishing power, while Denaby looked dangerous right to the end of the half.

After half-time the Colliery were better organised and made sorties into home side’s territory, but their moves all crumbled in the end. Denaby seemed to have lost their early fire and stalemate looked likely.

Maclntyre’s example

But In the 70th minute, MacIntyre, a 17-years-old tipped for future soccer honours, put them two up. Now Denaby were more confident than ever and the game was all theirs and Jones’s in the Thorne goal.

They continued to press and the Colliery’s defences looked shaky. Towards the end of the 89th minute, Pettit scored Denaby’s third and final goal.

Denaby should be pleased by this win, even against Thorne, struggling in the lower reaches of the league table. They showed themselves capable in defence and occasionally sparkling when on the rampage.
