Denaby United 3 York City 1

The steady improvement of the Denaby attack was continued in the match withYork on the Tickhill Square ground on Monday – at least in the first half. The wind, not quite so heavy as on Saturday, played a strong hand in the game, and with its help in the first half Denaby scored thrice.

York’s use of the advantage was not so good: they got one goal and went on deservingly beaten, if only for their or two inability to take the chances thrust upon them.

York played much clever football. Their approach work was rather neater and smarter than Denaby’s. But the finishing of the Denaby forwards was decidedly better than that of the York forwards. The Denaby men shot hard and often and Thomson had a very busy 45 minutes. The York crew tried to steer the ball past Bromage by sheer finesse and Taylor, Hunter and Bromage were not the sort of men to stand and watch that happen. On the play York should never have been three goals down at the interval, though on the other hand the work of the Denaby forwards well merited the goals they got.

Windle started the scoring a few minutes after the start, when a freekick was awarded because of a trip on Ben Johnson.

Another halfback JC Johnson got the second, with a shot that lack sting, but passed into the net because a York back made a wild lunge at the ball missed it, thus balking Thomson.

Parkinson’s got a neat third. Ranby managed York’s only goal.
