Denaby United 7 Long Eaton 2

After Lincoln City, Denaby found Long Eaton rather easy victims, and all the forwards scored. The match was uneventful until near the end, when Fawden took out a temporary transfer in order to score long Eaton’s second goal. It was a good one, too, it took Bromage absolutely by surprise; in fact, it surprise everybody, including the captain of the long Eaton team who warmly congratulated Fawden!

The first two goals ought to have been served by Critchley, for in both instances his judgement was poor. After five minutes Skeels centred high and the ball was carried towards goal by the wind. Critchley went out too far and the ball passed over his head into the goal. The second goal was scored after 25 minutes. Critchley went out to tackle Brown, who dribbled the ball round him and tapped it over the line.

Long Eaton then carried out a brilliant manoeuvre which resulted in Robinson reducing the lead. Near half-time Pearson received a pass from Skeels and scored Denaby’s fourth goal.

15 minutes after the restart Drew made an excellent run and cutting in, shot. Critchley failed to hold the ball in from the rebound and Drew scored. 10 minutes later Riley scored a good goal. And from a corner kick by Drew, Fawdon further increased Denaby’s lead. Just afterwards Denaby were awarded a penalty kick and Windle kicked the ball over the crossbar! Long Eaton gained a corner, and the kick was taken by Ousten. From a good distance out of goal Fawdon miskicked and scored against his own side.

The new blood introduced into the Denaby teams strengthened it, although Ogley did not quite come up to expectations. He should be given time to settle down, however, for he shows promise. The other new man, Riley, was efficient at centre half, and played a rattling good game. The forwards were good all along the line and were well supported by sound halfbacks. Bisby, as usual, was good. And Bromage was capable.

Long Eaton’s display was disappointing for we had expected more of them. Critchley was shaky, and the backs were hampered by the halves. When they were free, they could kick to some purpose, but more often were too crowded by the men in front. The forward line has good material, and it is hard to account for their ineffectiveness, even allowing for the quality of the Denaby defence.
