Denaby Master Tough Farsley To Take Points

Farsley Celtic 0, Denaby United 2

A competent performance by Denaby United gained two deserved points with a 2-0 win over Farsley Celtic, to retain their hundred percent, performance in Division I of the Yorkshire league.

But the game was marred by ugly scenes midway through the second half which disrupted play for two minutes while law and order was restored. The home team resumed without their centre forward Turner, sent off after the melee.

It started when Cooper, fouled by a Farsley player, was systematically kicked by two opponents before his teammates ran to the rescue. The resulting farce in which managers, linesmen and referee tried frantically to bring football back to the field was the worst I have ever seen.

Under the conditions high winds and high temperatures the football was pretty good and Denaby’s win was a combination of gritty persistence and the exploitation of the long ball down the middle, always a favourite at Farsley.

Threatened

Farsley were not always the underdogs, and a 10 minute spell on the resumption threatened the slender lead which Denaby had acquired a minute before half-time. Indeed they had one goal disallowed, and the reason they were reduced to that single effort was from the tenancy of Jim Wiggles and Roy Ainscough.

In the Farsley  ranks, halfbacks B. Hird and A. Brown worked with deliberate success, while in attack M. Hurd relied on more good football than his fellow forwards and had much the more success.

Launders put Denaby in the lead with an 18 yard shot following a superb bit of skill and a precision pass by McIntyre. Brian Parker added the second in the 82nd minute, when a comparatively weak shot bounced awkwardly in front of the box and bamboozled Burton.
