Denaby Maintain Their Impressive Away Form

Hull Brunswick 1  Denaby United 4

Against Hull Brunswick on Saturday, Denaby United proved again that if they could always reproduce the form shown in away matches they would be a real force in the Yorkshire League.

One of the prime requisites of Yorkshire League football is directed strength, but at Tickhill Square, Denaby, they often squander their resources. Away from the domestic scene they appear to relax and play a controlled game and it is then that they show their most aggressive front, strong in defence and full of menace in attack.

So it was at Hull with Denaby taking the initiative from the start and displaying a strength of purpose which the opposition could never equal.

Manager Harry Lee left his choice of team until he had inspected the pitch and Caunt was moved into the attack, with Whitehead falling back into Caunt’s full-back position. The move proved successful as Caunt made a difference in attack while Whitehead had a superb game in defence.

A Surprise

Denaby moved straight on to the offensive but they received a surprise when the East coast side took the lead in the 15th minute. From their only corner of the first half, right-back Smith prodded the ball home, after Gordon Smith, unsighted by his defenders, had been able only to palm the ball away.

However, the longer the game went, the more convincing became Denaby’s display. After 25 minutes Whittaker headed a superb goal from a fine cross from Gilbert, and soon Caunt blasted home the second.

In the second half Denaby strove to increase their lead, but bad luck and their own reluctance to shoot first time denied them a third until a fine diving header from Gilbert from a cross from Pettit did the trick. Gilbert completed the scoring near the end, rapping home a rebound from a free kick, taken by Law. which had hit the crossbar.

The big “if” now is whether Denaby can maintain their away form at home matches. On this performance that home record should soon be put right.
