On an afternoon on which several Midland League clubs found themselves at the wrong end of goal avalanches, Denaby United maintained their consistently splendid performances by holding Hull City to a goalless draw at Hull. They have now nine points from seven Midland league matches and have not been beaten since August 27th-their only reverse todate.

It is interesting to look back on the previous three seasons. In season 1952-53 Denaby took five points from their first seven Midland league matches and had to wait until December 13th (when they beat Wisbech 4-1) for their tenth point. Up to the turn of the year they had only 13 points.

In 1953-54, a season of excellent “gates” to herald their opening matches they had six points from the first seven games and equalled their present total by September 22nd (defeat of Boston 3-0) and had 21 points at the turn of the year.

Last season (1954 – 55) they had seven points from the first seven matches. Took their ninth pine (present total) on September 21st by defeating Bradford 4-0 but had only 15 at the turn of the year and, as supporters will remember, a scramble to escape the application later in the season.

Last season, in contrast, was the best Cup season for many years. For they beat Retford away 4-1, Langwith at home 6-0, Upton at home 2-0. Then lost at home to Creswell 5-2 failing fhereby to reach the first round proper in which, as it proved, they would have been drawn with Accrington Stanley, who beat Creswell 7-1.

Doubtless one secret of United’s present success has been the ability to keep the majority of the site together, Rimington, Hagan Cooper, Southall, Barnes, Gillott (the complete defence) and Poulson of the forwards have so far made all seven first-team appearances. Duggan has made six.

Denaby were more convincing in all departments than Hull on Saturday – but there were no goals. Tomorrow they entertain Bradford and on the following Tuesday are at home to Peterborough. September 24th they entertain Retford in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
