Lincoln City Reserve 3, Denaby United 3

With a strong cross wind blowing, the 3,000 spectators who watched the game between Lincoln City Reserve and Denaby United at Sincil Bank on Saturday expected a departure from the ordinary, but did not anticipate the succession of surprises that occurred.

To begin with the result was a draw of three goals each when the run of the play ought to – and seem likely to till near the end – have assured Denaby of a comfortable victory. It is usually considered good form to console a disappointed team by telling them they deserved to win, but in this instance the solace happened to be founded on fact.

Lincoln, for some inexplicable reason, elected to face a glaring sun in the first half, a fact which Denaby noted with elation and of which they took full advantage. Starting well on the left-wing they were two goals up in just over a minute Fawdon headed in the first, and from the kick-off again Allen ran straight through and scored easily.

Lincoln fought hard to reduce the lead but were well held by a sound defence. Denaby had the better of the play and their only real display of brilliance by Lincoln was a nice combined movement which enabled Stevenson to score after 20 minutes.

Lincoln began the second half better and showed more persistence in attack, but they soon slackened again. Sissons was called upon to deal with several hard shots and then, midway through the half, Skeels scored again.

As has been said, it was a game of surprise. During the last 10 minutes Lincoln put on a spare and equalised, Andrews and Merritt being the scorer’s.

Perhaps it is unfair to criticise over much either side from a spectator’s point of view it was a fine game, but only those who had to play in the breezy weather are able to tell the whole tale.
