Mansfield Town 1 Denaby United 0

Denaby United put a valiant fight at Field Mill on Saturday. Until the whistle was blown for the last time the issue was in doubt.

Mansfield had the better of the play during most of the game but much of the shooting was ineffective. When a forward did not bungle the opening good luck helped Denaby. The second half, for example, Taylor was going through when a back handled in the penalty area but the referee declined to award a penalty kick. Taylor’s shot hit the crossbar. Another instance was when Davies missed badly although with the goal at his mercy.

In spite of such things Denaby had a good share of the game and when they got the ball seemed to have a better the idea of what to do with it than the Mansfield men. Their control was excellent, while Mansfield had it too much in the air. The Denaby halves worked well and Ogley was always where he was wanted. The only goal came after 15 minutes. A hot Mansfield attack was in progress, and suddenly Heathcote shot hard. Bromage could not reach the ball, and Wheelhouse fisted it away. Taylor did not give Bromage a chance of stopping the penalty kick.

For a while Mansfield played with enthusiasm and enterprising and gave the Denaby defence plenty of work. It did not last long though Mansfield played badly. Neither did Denaby.
