Champions Easy Win.

Mansfield Town 4, Denaby United 0
Like their cup-tie opponents Wombwell, Denaby United may be excused for not showing their real form at Mansfield. They, too, have had a surfeit of football in the last few weeks, and the fact that they lost the day caused little surprise. The margin, however, by which they were beaten would seem to suggest that the game was entirely in favour of the champions, but the score was hardly a reflex of the run of the play. And Denaby, owing to injuries, were not at full strength.

There was little to choose between the teams during the opening stages. Mansfield got away, but a free-kick again Staniforth resulted in the Town being beaten back. Denaby pressed, and W. Rhodes tested Shaw with a hard left-foot drive. Soon afterwards, Kennie centred well, and Donoven headed into the arms of Bromage, who was called upon a moment later to first away a long shot from the extreme left. The game continued to be contested at a fast pace, and the visitors’ left wing cause a good deal of trouble.

Mansfield took the lead after rather more than 15 minutes’ play through ROBSON with a fine header, a minute after he had shot over the bar. A spell of even play followed, with the visitors striving vigorously to obtain the equaliser. Bromage saved finely from Stainforth. Slack pulled up Kennie, and Robson headed behind from Skeldon’s centre. Rowbotham then got away and shot wide. ROBSON was also responsible for the second goal, which came shortly before the interval. A nice movement by the left wing saw him beat Bromage with another header.

After the change of ends, Mansfield at once broke away, but good defensive work drove them back again. Skeldon shot wide with a fast drive, and Bromage saved in quick succession from Kennie and Bayliss. Burkinshaw get his forwards going, but Brelsford checked the movement when it had begun to look dangerous. Play had been very even, but Mansfield gradually asserted their superiority. The Denaby defence was in fine form, Bromage in particular. He saved well from Staniforth, but DONOVEN fallowed up and netted the third goal, and BRELSFORD added a fourth from a penalty after 65 minutes’ play. The Mansfield halves gave a very good display, and the pick of the Denaby eleven were Ashmore, Illingworth and Bromage.
