Denaby Win One, Lose The Other

Denaby United gained two points from the weekend’s Yorkshire League games despite playing under the severe handicap of a shortage of experienced mid-field players. Both Trevor Whittaker and John Royston were unavailable, and for the Sunday game with Ossett Albion, Peter Pettit was also on the sidelines.

Ossett Albion 3  Denaby United 0

Denaby were soundly beaten at Tickhill Square last week by lowly Ossett, and had little hope of turning the tables on Sunday with a side ravaged by injury.

Ossett are a strong side, full of running, and Denaby had little hope of cracking the defence with a lightweight attack in very windy conditions. Using the wind to advantage in the first half, Denaby were slightly on top, but luck was not with them when Wiggles hit the post. A goal down at half-time it, was a losing battle.

Howard Sapey was at Ossett to see his team in action for the first time, and the match will have given him much food for thought, but without Whittaker and Royston, Denaby United lose all semblance of a well-knit outfit. It is reported that Whittaker’s injury may keep him out of the game for some time yet.

Ossett came out and dictated play in the second half and netted twice more in the closing stages, when Denaby were fighting a constant rearguard.
