Denaby might have had Double Figures

Scarborough 2 Denaby United 5

Away from the dirt and grime of Denaby, United make full use of the bracing seaside air and treated themselves to a tonic victory at Scarborough’s expense – although their three-week goal winning margin does not signify their complete superiority.

United had the edge over the Seasiders in every department and not one of the Scarborough supporters in the 3000 “gate” would disagree with me when I state the visitors could easily have scored another five goals.

The attacking Denaby forward line – it would be wrong to single anyone out for special mention – was a constant source of worry to the home defenders who never mastered the task. Speaking of defence I might say one of the soundest Scarborough players was left back Lockwood, himself a former Denaby team member.

United included Wroe at left back and Scarborough had Upson in goal – their fifth different keeper in successive matches.

Denaby took command from the start, forcing two quick corners, and Cliff Martin had a shot saved. However, United got off to their now familiar “flying start” when Derek Holmes converted a Clark centre after eight minutes.

Egan and Martin both had shots saved between the 30th minute Martin served Egan with a pass and he rounded left back Greenwood and beat Upson from an acute angle.

After Holmes had increased Denaby’s lead with a 40th minute header, Scarborough showed a brief flash of their early-season form and reply twice through Parkinson (one penalty) to make the interval score 2-3.

Scarborough faded out of the picture the second of and several good football most Denaby brought applause from the crowd. Most noticeable was the way in which United won nearly every heading “dual.”

Martin (50th minute) and Clarke (70th minute) scored Denaby’s last two goals, but the Scarborough goal was peppered with shots and only Upson, plus a little erratic shooting, prevented a double-figure score.
