Guest’s Capital Scheming puts Denaby United on start of the Wembley trail

Selby Town  1  Denaby United  3

Displaying the immaculate ball control and precision passing which formerly delighted the hearts of Millmoor fans, veteran inside forward, Gladstone Guest was the ace schemer behind Denaby United’s encouraging 3-1 win at Selby on Saturday.

In successfully mounting this first A Cup hurdle Denaby reaped the reward of speedy controlled football. They will, however be well advised to keep up the pressure throughout game.

There was a tendency towards casualness in the closing stages of Saturday’s match we could prove fatal against sterner opposition.

Selby centre half, Hall was pronounced straight after injury and the home team was at full strength. Owing to a clash of colours both teams turned out in changed plane Street. Denaby were in blue and Selby reverted to white shirts with a red neck band.

Denaby won the toss and swept into the lead in three minutes. Guest flick heading past the astonished keeper after Shaw and headed a France cross on target.

Jenkins was a tricky raid on the Denaby left in a game which holds at lightning speed. In a spurt of Selby attacks Kendall and Firth brought Oslear into action. Denaby remain cool under pressure and left back Jim Williams took the eye with his neat interceptions and measured clearances.

In the Picture

Former Denaby winger Bunclark was repeatedly in the picture at this stage, but he missed a gilt-edged opportunity from 5 yards.

Debutant, George France show his paces in the next Denaby raid was only foiled at the expense of a corner. After Johnson had conceded a freekick on the edge of the box, Bunclark headed wide. Selby laboured in vain against the dominant visitor’s rearguard in which skipper, Johnson was a tower of strength.

Lacked Cohesion

Denaby went further ahead in the 20th minute when the irrepressible Guests coolly stroked the ball past the advancing keeper after Slater had split the home defence.

Urged on by their supporters, Selby attacked strongly on the resumption but lacked cohesion and often played into the hands of the visitors defence by misplacing the final pass. Their ill-fated efforts could be compared with Denaby’s experience with a week ago against Spennymoor. The ball simply would not run for them.

Selby gave away a penalty in the 69th minute when Kendall was adjudged to have handled – there are decision. Guests drove wide from the spot.

Young France paved the way for the third Denaby goal when he dribbled cleverly into the home penalty area. Shaw I stuck to an attempted clearance just score from close range. The “Robins” reduced the arrears after 75 minutes and Bainbridge converted a penalty and say Johnson handling infringement.

Both France (Denaby) and Bainbridge (Selby) missed sitters in the dying moments of the game.
