Shrewsbury Town 8 Denaby United 1

Denaby’s run of success in the Midland league was halted abruptly by Shrewsbury Town at Shrewsbury on Saturday. Denaby lost 8-1.

They meet Shrewsbury in the return fixture at Tickill square on December 28. This was Denaby’s heaviest defeat this season. Their last four games have yielded 19 goals; they had conceded nine during that period. Shrewsbury went ahead after three minutes through a penalty converted by Phillips. Lello got the second goal, and Black, Butler and Phillips put them five up at half time.

The pace was slower in the second half, Hurley getting Denaby’s consolation goal and Phillips (two) and Butler scoring for Shrewsbury. Going was hard on a heavy ground, but Shrewsbury showed greater speed and clever touches than had been seen this season. Lennon and Wright where often dangerous for Denaby. But the Shrewsbury defence had a joyful day.
