Frolics in Shields’ Mud

Four Times the Ball Stuck On Goal-Line

South Shields 2, Denaby United, 1.

United can thank the mud for keeping the South Shields score down to reasonable proportions in their Midland League game at Simonside Hall, South Shields, on Saturday.

For Denaby were on the receiving end for about 80 of the 90 minutes, but the Mariners found the utmost difficulty in getting the ball into the net.

Shields biggest handicap was the mud, Time and time again they got bogged down in it and there were at least four occasions when shots stuck in the mud right on the goal line.

Denaby’s face-saver was in the sharpness of the defenders in clearing under pressure. The defence was rarely able to get the attack into gear, but deserve a bouquet for outsmarting Shields by desperate clearance of the line in the nick of time.

Denaby Squandered Chance

The pattern of play was set in the first five minutes of the match when the Tynesiders gave goalkeeper Davey plenty of work to do.

United squandered a glorious chance to take the lead when Slater laid on a perfect through pass for Capey, but the outside right blasted well wide of the goal.

After that, Shields’ goalkeeper John Burn might have been off the field for all the work he was called on to do. United were rarely in the picture as the Mariners penned them in their own half, going ahead through WOODS after 18 minutes.

But Shields got a shock in the 62nd minute. Denaby’s first real raid in the second period produced a goal, Cabey engineering the move which gave FRIEL the easiest of opportunities. But Denaby did not catch the Mariners napping again and they had to defend desperately before a POWELL header gave Shields the points,

Goalkeeper Davey and right wing pair Capey and Slater were the pick of the United team.
